How to choose

Little cyclists grow

There’s a time in life when you don’t choose which shoes to wear, don’t choose vacations, and don’t choose which bike to ride. If you’re reading this, it means you’re in that phase of life where you have to choose all these things for a little one.

Pedagogical bikes

Balance bikes are a wonderful tool for playing with balance. With a low seat and feet firmly on the ground, the child feels secure. Taking the first steps, they experiment with balancing on two wheels; there’s always a split second when both feet aren’t on the ground. The trick is to learn one thing at a time, first balance, then pedaling. The process becomes so natural that training wheels are no longer needed. Starting from age 2.

Children’s bikes

Children’s bikes are identified by wheel size. We know a child’s bike doesn’t last long, and you might be tempted to get a bigger one. It’s possible, but they would have a bike that dominates them instead of them riding it.

Child seats

Front seat, rear seat, just a cushion, which one to choose?
Front seats hold up to 15 kg, rear seats up to 22 kg, and simple cushions depend on the rack’s capacity. Choose the seat where your child is most comfortable, with good safety belts and adjustable footrests. Keep them in front as long as you can; the experience will be more rewarding. Don’t be afraid to bike even in the rain; there are fantastic child seat rain capes available today.

Trailers

If you enjoy bike vacations or travel in low-traffic areas, a trailer is a great alternative to a child seat. They come in 2-seater and 1-seater versions and are usually foldable. For smaller children, there are reducers available. If you take rough paths, there are shock-absorbing trailers. The nicest ones can transform into strollers, and if you’re up for it, you can even attach skis and pull them on the snow.

Helmets

Of all the things you can give your child along with a bicycle, a helmet is definitely the most useful. It’s important that helmets are adjustable to accommodate growth and fit well. You should also make sure the straps are adjustable and that everything is in the right place once worn. If you want to understand how to wear a helmet, watch here
